Doug completed a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from the Australian National University and a PhD from Curtin University. He joined the University of Otago in 2006. Prior to this he was a Research Fellow, University of Wollongong for two years.

Most of my work is concerned with South Asia, particularly India (with a focus on the state of West Bengal), although I also have research interests in Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh. My research has focused on four main areas:

1) Rural Development, Environmental Management and Food Security.

2) Transboundary Water Resources.

3) Ports and Migrant Labour

4) Indian Cities and Socio-Spatial Changes associated with the 'new' India
